CHAPTER 6. ELECTIONSCHAPTER 6. ELECTIONS\Article 1. Governing Body

The non-partisan election of city officials shall be conducted in all respects as provided by the laws of Kansas governing the holding of city elections.

At all city elections the polls shall be open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m., unless different hours are set and publicly announced by the county election officer.

General elections shall take place on the Tuesday succeeding the first Monday in November. Succeeding elections will be held every two years for all such governing body positions whose terms have expired. The mayor and all council members shall have two year terms.

The term of office for newly elected councilmembers and mayor shall commence on the next regular meeting on or after December 1st of the year following certification of the election. The elected officers shall qualify by taking the oath or affirmation of office to be filed with the city clerk.

In accordance with K.S.A. 25-205 and K.S.A. 25-21a01 et seq., any person may become a candidate for city office by having had filed, on their behalf, either of the following:

(a)   a declaration of candidacy, accompanied by any fee required by law; or

(b)   a nomination petition. The nomination petition must be signed by five qualified electors of the city.
